This is the simplest and cheapest form of air conditioning, whereby the indoor unit is placed on an exterior wall, and sits back to back with the external unit, thereby removing the need for any ducting.
A split air conditioning system is one that has one outdoor compressor that serves one or more indoor units in different rooms. Indoor air conditioning units can be either wall mounted, ceiling cassettes, or compact ceiling cassettes.
A ducted system has an outdoor unit, serving a number of indoor units that are often located in loft spaces or above ceilings. These indoor units then provide heating or cooling to individual rooms in the house through ducts, meaning that the only thing you will see in the room is a vent grill. These systems are often preferred as there is no unit on show, however, they often tend to be more expensive to retrofit, and require ceiling or loft space to do so.
