How to choose the right air conditioner for me

We offer a range of air conditioners and our team of friendly experts are on hand to discuss your requirements and advise you on the best system to meet your requirements.  There a few bits of information it may be helpful for you to have when you reach out.  This will help us to provide you with the best guidance:

  • What size is the space and what is it used for?
  • Is it just one room, or multiple rooms?
  • What is the position and purpose of the room?
  • Are there any features which are important to you? Air conditioners can come with a variety of features such as programmable thermostats, remote controls, and even WiFi connectivity to enable you to control your air conditioner from your phone.
What size air conditioner do I need?

When considering the size of the air conditioning system that you need, this will be based on its capacity to heat or cool a room.  This capacity is measured in Kilowatts (kW).

How many kilowatts do I need?

It’s very simple to work out approximately what size air conditioner is right for you.  First, calculate the floor area of the space to be cooled or heated by multiplying the length of the space by the width.  For example, a room with a length of 6m and a width of 8m will have a floor area of 48sq. metres.  Next, you will need your ceiling height, and this will determine the number of watts to be used in the calculation.

2.4m height = 150 watts

2.7m height = 160 watts

3.0m height = 175 watts

If your ceiling was 2.4m in height, then this would be the calculation:

48 sq. metres x 150 watts = 7,200 watts or 7.2 kW.

What other factors need to be taken into account?

Whilst the table above is a good general guide, there are a number of other factors which should be considered.

  1. The number of rooms you want to heat or cool.  You will need to ensure that you calculate what is required for each room to ensure that you have the right unit for each space.
  2. The position of the room.  You’ll need 10 per cent less capacity for shaded rooms, and 10 per cent more capacity for rooms in the sunlight.  Rooms on higher floors will also need more cooling capacity as heat rises.
  3. The purpose of the room.  If your air conditioning system is for a kitchen or a room with other appliances that generate heat, you will also need to increase the capacity of your unit.
  4. The quality of insulation.  Poorly insulated homes may need a higher output to cool properly.  Rooms where much of the wall is glass will heat up more than those that don’t.

The importance of getting it right

If you choose a unit that is too small for your space, it won’t cool or heat the space efficiently. It would need to run for longer periods of time and even then they may not effectively cool the space.  As a result it would also increase your electricity bill.

If you choose a system that is too large for your space, it would cool air in the room much more quickly and begin to cycle on and off.  If it is constantly on and off, it may not run long enough to extract the humidity from the room which will leave you feeling uncomfortable.

Systems that are too large or small for the space run inefficiently which make the units work harder and ultimately lead to increased electricity costs.
